The Kingston and St Andrew Football Association (KSAFA) 2016 David Hunt Management Seminar has been hailed as a resounding success by the club representatives who attended, including Andrew Price, chairman of the KSAFA technical committee.The management team from 30 football clubs was in attendance to partake in a full day of insightful presentations from representatives in different industries. The panel explained to the audience how to improve their functions in detail and properly manage their clubs. The seminar that was held at the Melbourne Cricket Club in Kingston was also attended by the representatives of three clubs from St Mary.Miguel Williams, chairman, disciplinary committee, KSAFA, gave an informative presentation on the club constitution and Article of Association. Anika Smith, assistant vice-president for marketing at Mayberry Investments Limited, delivered an interactive presentation on how the clubs can market their activities on low budgets using social media promotion, guerrilla marketing, among other techniques.Match day preparationManager for the Jamaica national senior men’s team, Roy Simpson, explained the importance of match-day preparation and advised that it is vital that the coaches and managers pay attention to details and have pre, post and match day checklists to ensure things are going accordingly.Financial advice came from Gary Peart, CEO, Mayberry Investments, who encouraged the coaches and managers to seek professional assistance with their financial plans and showed them different ways to go about seeking sponsorship.”Mayberry is happy to be on board this initiative we encourage community development and we like giving back where we can. During my presentation, I didn’t use fancy big words or sugar-coated anything, I had one main objective and that was to explain to the coaches and managers that everyone everywhere has a sad story and nobody respect a sufferer. It’s important that they understand that no matter how bad the situation is perseverance is key,” said Peart.”In terms of managing their money it is also important that they have a financial plan outlining the basics, what do they have, what they need and determine how they will balance it. Getting a chartered accountant to review or advise on their financial plan could play a major role in the growing of the clubs,” he added.According to Price and other attendees, the information delivered by the various speakers was very insightful.”I think that all the clubs benefited from a management and administrative standpoint,” said Price. “They told us how to manage, how to market the clubs, how the clubs can get assistance in sponsorship, how we can manage our very meagre resources and how we can improve our club management on a year-on-year situation.”Coach of Central Kingston, Michael Howell, endorsed Price’s comments and said in many ways the information was extremely beneficial.”It was an eye-opener. It allowed you to pick up on things that you would have probably overlooked when it comes to managing and running the club,” he said.Price said the KSAFA club representatives also gained useful information from the referees about the laws of the game, by Garnett Page of the Jamaica Referees Association.”There were some interesting questions posed by the members of the clubs and it was a very interactive session and the clubs would have benefited from this experience,” he said. “I believe it was a resounding success and it will empower the members of KSAFA to continue building and developing good football players for the national programme.”Howell expressed the view that more seminars of a similar nature would be a big help to the clubs.
