With a star-studded 21-man field consisting of the world’s best riders, the race was destined to be a hard one with no quarter asked or given. The 26-year-old from Franschhoek, who currently resides in Johannesburg, rode a well-controlled race and pulled out something extra at the end to close down the gap on an escaping group. 5 April 2012 SAinfo reporter ‘Tried to play it cool’“I knew somebody was going to attack in the finish, and just tried to play it cool and make other people chase. It’s definitely the hardest I’ve ever had to work for a track cycling race,” the aptly named Swift said afterwards. Talent and class Hoffman, around 10 lengths behind Swift at the bell lap, showed his immense talent and undoubted class when he turned the burners on the second last corner to pass five riders. South African sprint sensation Nolan Hoffman delivered the performance of his life to clinch a silver medal in the 15km scratch race at the 2012 UCI Track World Champs in Melbourne, Australia on Wednesday. Around the last bend, it was clear that a podium finish was within reach for the South African. He put in an almighty effort to try and catch Swift, but it was not to be. Nonetheless, Hoffman’s enormous final lunge saw him miss out on the gold medal by a mere half a wheel. He was ecstatic to cross the line in second place. Hoffman believed it was a breakthrough performance at his first elite World Championships. “I’ve been to all the World Cups and I’ve struggled a bit and I always thought the World Champs is going to be hard,” he said with some surprise. Austrian Andreas Muller made a break with with six laps of the 60 remaining to open up a-third-of-a-lap lead. Czech rider Martin Blaha, Italian Elia Viviani and Briton Ben Swift chased down Mueller to catch him with less than two laps left before the British rider kicked to open a lead in the final back straight.
Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Rain works its way across Ohio today. Rain totals look to be from .25″ to 1.5″, and we will need thunderstorms to get to the upper end of the range. Now, we do see several thunderstorms threats through the day, and we do still have potential for strong to severe weather. The best place for this stronger action to develop today will be in far eastern parts of Ohio, going into PA and WV, and that will be later this afternoon and this evening, when we are able to take advantage of the full heating of the day. That will be what is responsible for the large majority of the rain totals on the 10 day map below. Rain coverage today will be nearly 1o0% of the state, and we would not be surprised to see a few areas of far eastern Ohio even deal with some rain in and around sunrise tomorrow.Dry weather returns for tomorrow, although it will be somewhat of a slow transition in the east. The eastern quarter of Ohio can see clouds linger through a good part of the day tomorrow, before sunshine finely breaks through. Rain free weather continues through Sunday mid afternoon. We see plenty of sunshine in the period, warmer temps, and building humidity. Still, though, it will be a good pattern for crop growth and development.Scattered showers pop up in northern NW Ohio Sunday evening, and then drift across the state through Monday. Moisture totals for the period will be from a few hundredths to half an inch over 60% of the state. We will be dry Tuesday. The map at right shows cumulative 10 day rain totals through midweek next week.A bit of a chance in our forecast for midweek. WE are now going dry for the Independence Day holiday and for Thursday as well. There just does not look to be enough moisture in the atmospheric profile to get too worked up about any front. In fact, we will trend drier for most of the 11-16 day period as well. We expect 1 front to try to develop somewhere in the period form the 6th through the 9th, but it will only have potential for .25”-.5” with 70% coverage. Then a strong upper level high is slated to take over right on through mid-month.Temperatures from here forward will be mostly normal to about 2-4 degrees above normal. Significant heat will not be a problem. But, after today, we also do not see exceptional rains coming. That will be helpful initially, as we need a bit of drying to work in to parts of the state, but as we move toward mid-July, the current pattern offers only timely small rains, and nothing to keep the status quo. So, we think that we will have significant net drying in our soil profile from later this week through the first half of July.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday said he would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Mines Pralhad Joshi to seek solutions to restart the mining industry in Goa, which stands banned by the Supreme Court since 2018. Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of a function in Panaji on Sunday, Mr. Sawant said he would meet them both after Mr. Joshi familiarises himself with his portfolio. He reiterated that resolving the mining deadlock was a priority for his government. Last month, Mr. Sawant had said harvesting of mining dumps near the mining leases was one of the options his government was examining to resume the mining activity in the interest of stakeholders, despite the Supreme Court ban on mining in 88 leases. There are currently over 736 million tonnes of iron ore dumped in mountain-like heaps in Goa’s mining belt. Mr. Sawant is expected to finalise a policy for dump ore harvesting by July this year.
