1 December 2015As South Africa marks World Aids Day today, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa said the country had made great advances in its HIV treatment programme.“We have acted in various ways – big and small – to spread information, to fight stigma and to promote healthy lifestyles,” he said. “We have made protection our priority, from classrooms to sports fields, from the factory floor to our homes, from our bedrooms to our boardrooms, and all corners of our society.”South Africa had one of the biggest HIV treatment programmes in the world, he said, with more than 3 million people on anti-retroviral drugs. It had resulted in people living longer. Life expectancy had increased from 53 years in 2006 to just over 62 years in 2013 and mother-to-child transmission had also been reduced.“We are inspired by the many actions taken by South Africans from all walks of life over many years to achieve an Aids-free generation.”ThemesThe global theme for World Aids Day is “Getting to Zero”. South Africa’s approach is “Towards an HIV-Free Generation: Rise. Act. Protect. Zero.” It serves as a call to action for all communities.“As a nation we must rise to this challenge determined, committed and confident that we can succeed as a people and as individuals we must act to inform and support and encourage.“No action is too small, no contribution is wasted; we must protect ourselves and those who are nearest to us. We must protect the vulnerable, we must combat stigma and create an environment in which all can feel safe and comfortable to test and be treated. The end of HIV as a public health threat is in sight.”This Tuesday is #WorldAidsDay! Get Tested. Young women and girls still accounted for a high number of new HIV infections.“We need to spread the word about prevention, encouraging all sexually active South Africans to use condoms,” the deputy president urged. “We need to encourage people to test for HIV and TB. We need to ensure that all those who need treatment receive treatment and that they remain on treatment.”He concluded that with harder work and greater determination, an Aids-free South Africa and an Aids-free world, was achievable.Source: South African Government News Agency
President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), Senator Norman Grant, has called on members of the Jamaican Diaspora to invest in the country’s agricultural sector.Addressing a session of the 5th Biennial Jamaica Diaspora Conference at the Montego Bay Convention Centre on June 18, Senator Grant told participants that investing in the sector will bring about great returns.“The way towards getting great returns on your investment is to invest in Jamaica’s agriculture and there is a strategy for not only investing in agriculture, but in rural development,” Senator Grant said.He also encouraged Diaspora members to seize the opportunity to participate in the redevelopment of their communities.Senator Grant informed that the Ministry of Agriculture and the JAS will be embarking on a major outreach to engage members of the Diaspora and will also be establishing a framework with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade to see how the effort can be supported.Focusing on the theme: ‘Agriculture and Agro Parks: Jamaica’s Food Security and Export Opportunities for Agriculture and Agribusiness’, the President pointed out that the establishment of Agro Parks is a major project in which Diaspora members could invest.“The purpose of this project is to provide support in agricultural infrastructure in specific production zones. The increased production of specific crops within these zones will support the Government’s food import substitution programme and increase exports,” he said, adding that it would also result in improved national food security and bolster the linkages between the Agricultural and Tourism sectors. The concept of the Agro Parks, as promoted by the Government, will seek to focus on a variety of agricultural related activities along the value chain.“So, we are not only focusing on fresh produce, but on the entire value chain within a geographic location in which several primary producers, suppliers, processors or distributors co-operate to achieve sustainable market driven food production,” Senator Grant explained. The project will involve major infrastructural, works such as irrigation, procurement of equipment and demonstration plots in nine strategic locations across the country. It will also facilitate and engage 8,000 acres of land to include agricultural production.“The strategy is to ensure that at least 100 young farmers become involved in agriculture. So, if young persons in the Diaspora want to come home and invest in agriculture, this is an avenue,” Senator Grant said. The Agro Parks, which are to be implemented at a cost of US$8 million over the next three years, are being funded in part by the European Union.Contact: Aldeen Campbell

When the toy floats, it indicates the spacecraft has reached microgravity. That was little Earth’s job initially, but now it’s getting the full ISS experience thanks to McClain. McClain posed with the Earth toy after entering the Crew Dragon capsule on Sunday after the capsule successfully docked with the station. She then took it aboard the ISS to look at its home planet. “Yes, buddy, that’s your Mother Earth. Isn’t she beautiful?” McClain tweeted. Crew Dragon makes history Musk is following Earth’s escapades in space and retweeted one of McClain’s images. “Buddy is like an Earth Pokémon,” the SpaceX founder wrote.Crew Dragon is spending a total of five days docked at the ISS before returning to Earth for a planned landing in the Atlantic Ocean. The Demo-1 mission marks a milestone for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. If the capsule passes this trial, then NASA and SpaceX hope to launch astronauts on Crew Dragon as soon as midyear. The endearing toy comes from Celestial Buddies, which makes plush planets. The company was taken by surprise when the toy went to space, saying, “a sudden flurry of orders for Earth in the 48 hours prior to liftoff had made us wonder if something was afoot.” The little Earths are now on back order. There were bogus claims that Brad and Jennifer are going to get married in Paris or Brad bought a $56 million mansion house as a gift for Jennifer. The actor did laugh at the question but does it mean that he is actually back together with Jennifer Aniston but is not disclosing anything since his divorce is not yet finalized with Angelina Jolie?Well, their representatives have stated in the past that there is nothing going on between Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston. Brad did attend Jen’s 50th birthday party but it was a one-time thing and does not indicate that they are going to get back together in a romantic way.

After it docks, two CubeSats—ArduSat-1 and ArduSat-X—held in its cargo module will be deployed into an orbit above the Earth. Talking humanoid robot launches on Japan rocket © 2013 Phys.org The two tiny cube-shaped satellites will be pulled from the same cargo module that holds Kirobo—a talking humanoid type robot designed to study whether astronauts might benefit from an electronic companion. The small satellites usher in a new low cost era in space technology—each will offer the possibility of non-professionals running real-time experiments aboard a real orbiting satellite. Both of the miniature satellites are loaded with technology, including cameras, ozone and CO2 sensors, a Geiger counter and temperature gauges. They also have an onboard computer running Arduino, an open-source platform that allows for controlling instruments aboard the craft. Arduino was chosen because it is an already established platform used by educational institutions and hobbyists alike. Both craft have a set list of objectives to fulfill before time runs out—both will plummet to the Earth at some point in time between three and seven months. Once its initial objectives have been fulfilled, the satellite will be made available to other projects run by customers on the ground. $125 will get a user three days worth of satellite time while $250 will get a whole week. Since each satellite is capable of running 16 experiments simultaneously, there will be plenty of opportunities for schools and other organizations to take advantage of this unique opportunity.Shortly after docking with the ISS, ArduSat-1 and ArduSat-X will be pulled from the cargo module by a robotic arm which will then release them into space. The two CubeSats were partly built in Australia and were also partly funded via a Kickstarter project. The aerospace company responsible for their creation is Nanosatisfi LLC—their stated goal is to “democratize access to space.” They deployment of the two CubeSats is just the beginning they have told reporters. They hope to send up hundreds or even thousands of tiny satellites allowing almost anyone with a desire to perform experiments in space, a platform for doing so.
