Mobile Security 2 Share your voice A physical security key on top of an Android phone. Josh Miller/CNET Security keys are an effective way to keep your accounts secure from hackers, but they suffer from a major challenge: They’re inconvenient. Not a lot of people want to buy and carry an extra key or Bluetooth fob just for logging in — which is why most two-factor authentication is done through text messages, even though it’s less secure. Up to 90% of Gmail users don’t even use 2FA, a Google software engineer revealed in 2018. Convenience is a big hurdle, and Google is hoping to solve that by making your phone the security key. It’ll have the same functionalities as a physical security key but won’t require you to carry an extra device to keep your accounts safe. That means that like a security key, your phone will warn you if an imposter website is trying to steal your password. Unlike using SMS or authenticator codes for logging in, security keys have to verify that the website you’re logging in on is legitimate. The updated security feature is coming only to Android devices versions 7 and up, which account for about 50% of all active users, according to Google’s distribution board. For now, it’s working only on Google’s Chrome browser and with Google accounts, but the company expects to expand availability. “This is a natural evolution of the standard. Just as some security keys only worked with Chrome initially and moved to other browsers, we’re seeing the same thing happening here,” said Christiaan Brand, a Google product manager for identity and security. You can set up the security key on your phone by going to your settings on Google and selecting 2-Step Verification. From there, you need to click on Add a Security Key and choose your phone as a device. School of phishPhishing attacks are common and often hard to spot, fooling even seasoned politicians. Security keys help prevent hackers from getting into your accounts because even if your password were stolen, an attacker would have to have the physical key to log in. “We’re solving the problem of someone thousands of miles away trying to steal your password,” said Sam Srinivas, Google Cloud’s product management director. “With this, someone has to be within 100 feet of you to try to attack you.” When Google first released its own Titan Key, it cost $50 for a set, and Brand said the company was hoping to eventually drive the cost down to less than $10. Last year, Google released its own Titan Security Key in both a USB and Bluetooth version. Sarah Tew/CNET By turning Android devices into security keys, Google is essentially giving them out for free. That much coverage could make it easier for more people to start using security keys, said Conor Gilsenan, a security researcher at All Things Auth.Over Christmas, the security expert said, he bought his family members security keys, but it took more than two hours to set up all these devices. “This is such a big deal,” Gilsenan said. “Being able to utilize the phone that you already have removes an entire barrier to better forms of two-factor authentication for the average internet user.”Brand said the phone security keys meet the FIDO authentication standard, which means any websites allowing for that standard will work with your phone as a security key. That includes websites like Facebook, Twitter and GitHub. Convenience is keyBrand is hoping the launch will convince other pages to accept phones as security keys. The technology works by connecting your phone and your computer’s Bluetooth when you’re logging in on a Google account. You’ll be prompted with a message on your phone to verify the log-in once they’re connected. While they’re using Bluetooth to communicate, the two devices don’t have to pair with each other, Brand said.”We devised a new standard on top of Bluetooth to make sure that these don’t need to pair,” he explained. There have been criticisms of using Bluetooth in security keys, because the wireless protocol could be open to security vulnerabilities. When Google announced its Bluetooth security fob last year, Yubico CEO Stina Ehrensvard released a statement saying Bluetooth didn’t have the same security standards as NFC and USB.Brand said Google had the capability to let your phone function as a security key through a USB cable but decided against it. “We’ve done user studies, and asking a user to have a cable ready that’ll fit both their devices almost takes away all the convenience of using their phone,” he said. Still, even with all the convenience of phones, Brand and Srinivas recommend having a second, backup USB key. That way, if you ever lose your phone or the battery’s dead, you can still log in. Now that half of all Android devices can function as security keys, the new challenge will be getting people to actually use them that way. Security keys have a lower adoption rate than 2FA as a whole, but the convenience will likely draw more people to better protect their accounts. “You don’t have to plug it in, and you don’t have to buy a new device, since you already have the phone,” Gilsenan said. “The bigger challenge is communicating to people that they actually need 2FA.” Tags Comments Google
India is poised to pip China as the world’s top consumer of gold in 2015 due to reduced demand for gold in the country due to a rally in stocks and India’s projected high economic growth.”We expect both India and China’s gold demand to be in the range of 900-1,000 tonne (in 2015), with India slightly higher than China. This is mainly due to the higher economic growth momentum projected in India and China’s lack of momentum,” said Somasundaram PR, World Gold Council (WGC) Managing Director, India, according to Bloomberg TV.Gold consumption in India is expected to increase by 23 percent to 1,000 tonne this year if the country registers a gross domestic product (GDP growth) of 7.5-8 percent, according to a report by the World Gold Council.Demand for gold in China fell by 10 percent in the first quarter this year, as stocks made gold investments less appealing.Despite a sharp decline in recent sessions, the Chinese stocks still trade at multi-year highs, with a gain of nearly 34% so far this year. The benchmark Shanghai Composite index has increased by around 120 percent over the past one year.Chinese jewellery buying is currently weighed down by investors’ rush to bullish stock markets. Even potential buyers of gold in China are eyeing stock markets and opening stock accounts.”There’s so much money in market now and nowhere to flow to but stocks,” Chester Liaw, economist at Forecast Pte in Singapore, told TheStreet. The Chinese markets are expected to go up further as expectations rise over additional easing measures by the authorities to boost the sluggish economy, which could further reduce demand for gold in the country.”Investors’ core motivations haven’t changed. We hope markets go up steadily, not with sharp fluctuations,” said Zhao Xijun, deputy finance school dean at Renmin University in Beijing.Besides, impressive post-listing performance of Chinese initial public offerings (IPOs) has also created frenzy among investors. In the past one year, all the IPOs have generated more than 40% returns on listing.

Donald Trump. File photoUS president Donald Trump is in full campaign mode five months before pivotal mid-term elections, employing a mix of anti-immigration rhetoric, Democrat-bashing and off-script improvisation in a bid to help Republicans hold their congressional majority.Democrats, riding a swell of grass-roots activism and buoyed by Trump’s poor approval numbers and an ongoing investigation into possible coordination between Russia and Trump’s campaign, are seeking to flip the US House and Senate.Trump is pushing back, hitting the road-including at a fiery Tuesday night rally in Tennessee-as he seeks to energize his base to come out and vote in November for Republican Senate candidates in states where he can have a major impact. But the strategy apparently seeks to minimize his exposure in states where Republicans in close House races might feel the divisive president’s presence would be more of a hindrance, motivating Democrats and independents instead of helping moderate GOP candidates.Despite the risks of an unrestrained Trump addressing large crowds at campaign-style events, it is a strategy aimed at firing up his loyal supporters in red states where vulnerable Senate Democrats are running for re-election, or challenging for open seats.Such was the case Tuesday when Trump rallied in Nashville in support of congresswoman Marsha Blackburn’s bid to succeed retiring Senator Bob Corker.“We need more Republicans,” Trump boomed.“If you want your country to be safe, then you must go out and get the Democrats the hell out of office.”A sitting president’s party often loses seats during mid-term elections. While analysts say Democrats have a decent shot at flipping the 24 seats needed to reclaim the House, the opposition party is up against an extraordinarily tough Senate election map.Of the 35 Senate races, Democrats are defending a whopping 26 seats — 10 of them in states that Trump won in 2016.And Democrats are seeing their overall mid-term advantage shrink. In December, according to a RealClearPolitics polling average, Democrats enjoyed a 13-point advantage among voters who were asked which party they would support in the 2018 congressional election. That figure this week stood at just four points.Trump ‘coming after’ vulnerable DemocratsThe president has grown increasingly annoyed at his party’s 51-49 Senate majority as he seeks to push through his policy agenda, including a dramatic curtailing of illegal and legal immigration.Highlighting his rigid stance during his Nashville rally, he recalled the term he used recently to describe undocumented immigrants, including members of transnational gang MS-13, targeted for deportation.“What was the name?” Trump goaded the crowd. “Animals!” they shouted.Trump also savaged the Democratic candidate, former Tennessee governor Phil Bredesen, insisting he would be in the pocket of the Senate and House Democratic leaders.“He’s an absolute total tool of Chuck Schumer and of course the MS-13 lover, Nancy Pelosi,” Trump said.Over the past month Trump has held campaign-style rallies or speeches in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana and Tennessee-all states he carried in 2016, and where Republicans are facing tough Senate races. On Thursday he heads to Texas.Trump is also expected to travel in the coming weeks to North Dakota, Montana, Missouri, and West Virginia, the New York Times reported, citing White House officials familiar with the president’s summer strategy. They are states that Trump won easily, and where Senate Democrats face tough re-elections.Several other states may be added to the itinerary later, including Florida, where outgoing Governor Rick Scott is spending millions of dollars of his own personal fortune in a bid to oust a Senate Democratic incumbent.Trump on Tuesday night “had a message for 2018 red state Dems – he’s coming after them too,” said Katie Martin, communications director for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the party’s Senate campaign arm.He relished his opportunity before the cheering crowd to tout his economic successes including major tax cuts that he signed into law.But Trump also eagerly returned to one of the tropes of his 2016 campaign, by declaring that Mexico would pay for a wall that he intends to build on the southern US border.“They’re going to pay for the wall and they’re going to enjoy it,” Trump said.

The vessels, dubbed Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessels or ACTUVs, are designed to be unmanned, with only intermittent communication from operators on shore or on a ship, and to require no maintenance for months. They will also obey navigational rules and be able to avoid collisions at sea.The three main objectives of the program are to build an “X-ship” that operates without anyone stepping aboard at any point in its operating cycle, secondly to demonstrate the technical viability of the system under “sparse remote supervisory control”, and thirdly to demonstrate the anti-submarine capability of the vessel and its “novel suite of sensors”. The ACTUV is unlike other unmanned vessels in that it is designed for global, independent deployment for months at a time.Proponents claim crewless vessels would save the U.S. Navy money and free the expensive crewed ships from the routine work of continuously cruising the oceans shadowing submarines. The unmanned frigates would locate a submarine by “pinging’ with active sonar to detect the submarine’s echoes, which means those on the submarine would know they have been detected. While nuclear submarines may be fast enough to escape the stalking frigate, fast and quiet diesel-electric submarines would not. © 2010 PhysOrg.com Explore further More information: FBO announcement (pdf) Two Boeing X-45A Unmanned Jets Continue Coordinated Flights Other unmanned vessels are already in use, with Israel deploying Unmanned Surface Vehicles (USVs), mainly for surveillance purposes, and the U.S. Navy deploying unmanned drones from its submarines.DARPA is the research and development section of the U.S. Department of Defense, which is charged with the job of maintaining the U.S. military’s technological superiority and avoiding technological surprises that could threaten the nation’s security.
